Sporting CP club

Sporting Clube de Portugal, also known as Sporting CP or simply Sporting, is a Portuguese sports club situated in Lisbon. It is renowned for its diverse range of sports departments and disciplines, as well as its impressive trophy collection. However, it is most famous for its men’s professional football team, which competes in the Primeira Liga, the top tier of Portuguese football.

Founded on July 1, 1906, Sporting is among the “Big Three” clubs in Portugal that have never experienced relegation from the Primeira Liga, along with their rivals Benfica and Porto. The team is affectionately nicknamed “Leões” (Lions) after the lion symbol in the middle of the club’s crest, and “Verde e Brancos” (Green and Whites) due to their horizontally striped green and white shirts. Their home stadium, the Estádio José Alvalade, was constructed in 2003, replacing the previous one built in 1956. The club’s anthem, “A Marcha do Sporting” (“Sporting’s March”), was composed in 1955, and its supporters are known as “Sportinguistas.” Sporting holds the second-largest membership in Portugal, with over 160,000 members, and ranks sixth in the world.

In terms of accolades, Sporting is the third most decorated Portuguese football team, having earned 54 major trophies. Domestically, they have secured 19 League titles, 17 Taças de Portugal, a joint-record of 4 Campeonato de Portugal, 4 Taças da Liga, and 9 Supertaças Cândido de Oliveira. In European competitions, Sporting won the 1963–64 European Cup Winners’ Cup and were runners-up in the UEFA Cup in 2005. They were invited to play in the first European Champions Cup match on September 4, 1955, and have appeared in the most editions of the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League (32), achieving the second-highest number of matches played and won in the tournament, and ranking 2nd in the all-time club ranking.

AS Monaco

AS Monaco Football Club SA, commonly known as AS Monaco or Monaco, is a professional football club based in Fontvieille, Monaco. Despite not being located in France, the club is a member of the French Football Federation (FFF) and competes in Ligue 1, the highest tier of French football. It was founded in 1918 and plays its home games at the Stade Louis II, while its training center is situated in la Turbie, France.

Despite its Monégasque origin, Monaco has been remarkably successful in French football, boasting eight league titles, five Coupe de France trophies, and one Coupe de la Ligue. The club has also participated in various European football competitions, finishing as runners-up in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1992 and the UEFA Champions League in 2004.

AS Monaco’s traditional colors are red and white, and they are affectionately known as Les Rouge et Blanc (The Red and Whites). The club holds membership in the European Club Association. In December 2011, a significant stake of the club was sold to an investment group led by Russian oligarch and billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev. With Rybolovlev’s substantial financial support, Monaco swiftly returned to Ligue 1 and secured their first league title in 17 years during the 2016-17 season.
