‘Very strange’: Pundit cannot believe Chelsea didn’t pay £73m for ‘quality’ 22-year-old

Philippe Albert has said that Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea should have signed Amadou Onana from Sean Dyche’s Everton in the summer transfer window.

The former Belgium international defender has told La Capitale that Chelsea should have paid the €85 million (£73 million) needed to secure the services of Everton defensive midfielder Amadou Onana.

Chelsea told about transfer mistake regarding Everton star Amadou Onana

Albert has noted that the 22-year-old is a very good player.

The pundit is surprised that the Belgium international defensive midfielder is still at Everton.

Onana was linked with moves away from Everton in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal, Manchester United and West Ham United all were reportedly interested in signing the 22-year-old.

The London Evening Standard reported in August 2023 that Chelsea had Onana as a potential back-up to Moises Caicedo.

The Blues managed to sign Ecuador international midfielder Caicedo from Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion.

Albert said, as translated by SportWitness: “Physically Amadaou is a monster and technically he also has quality.

“I am very surprised that no one paid his €85 million clause.

|When I see how easily Chelsea spend the money to buy anything and everything, I find it very strange that they don’t buy a player like Onana for less than €100 million.”

Chelsea did not need Amadou Onana

We do not think that Chelsea needed to sign Amadou Onana from Everton in the summer transfer window.

Along with Moises Caicedo, the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners also signed Romeo Lavia.

And the Blues already had Enzo Fernandez.

While Chelsea have been signing the best available young players for a while now, they need not have spent a lot of money to bring in Onana and not be able to even start him on a regular basis.

Onana has made 37 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has scored one goal and given two assists in those games.
